Hats off to Emily Maitlis. Last week, the Newsnight presenter played arbiter in a wonderfully hostile row between Alastair Campbell and a Daily Mail shill over the controversial article besmirching Ed Miliband’s father.

On Monday, Maitlis faced the far more difficult task of maintaining a straight face while questioning the Cookie Monster, erstwhile star of Sesame Street, on what had hitherto been considered a hard news programme.

She did it… just.

Cookie Monster and his acolyte, Elmo, are due to star in a new programme for CBeebies, with Maitlis quizzing the monster about his big move to the BBC.

Rumours that Paxman "ducked" the interview remain unconfirmed.

Not content with mere words and bypassing fisticuffs entirely, Eric Joyce upped the ante and went straight for hooligan's favourite method of violence, the headbutt. After one or two too many sherries Joyce flew into a rage in a packed Westminster bar, headbutting Tory MP for Pudsey Stuart Andrew and allegedly attacking three other people. South London rag, News Shopper thought that it had come up with a rather lovely idea for a piece when it decided to ask local MPs what their summer holiday plans were. Reporter Dan Keel set about collecting said information and was met with plans of sun, sand and then this....DAN: Hi it's Dan from the News Shopper newspaper.
