Is Gary Glitter on Twitter? The stage name of the glam rock star from the 70s, 80s and 90s is in the top trending position in the UK, and fourth worldwide after users of the social media site spotted a new account under the name Gary Glitter @OfficialGlitter.

The profile of the singer-songwriter, born Paul Francis Gadd, is described in the Twitter biography as “The Official twitter of Gary Glitter. Managed and updated by me. King of rock & roll.”

It does not appear with the blue verification tick provided by Twitter to confirm the authenticity of the account. However this process tends to take a number of days.

Additionally, as witnessed by many that were fooled by a Twitter-user who posed as Rupert Murdoch’s wife, Wendi Deng, and was given a the stamp of credibility by the social media site, Twitter’s verification does not always prove veracity.

The appearance of the account has caused a Twitter storm. Get Glitter Off Twitter is trending alongside the popstar's name, for those who are more hostile to the singer.

Glitter, whose three-and-half-year travel ban imposed for paedophilia was lifted in November, has over 1,800 followers and has already tweeted about the possibility of a comeback tour now he has his passport returned.

All of Gary Glitter's tweets, retweets and favourties seem to be relentlessly concerned with.... you guessed it: Gary Glitter. He is following only nine accounts, which are all UK newspapers, apart from the Associated Press and The Daily Mail On Lie, which seems to be a spoof Daily Mail account. The latest tweet from the 67-year-old says:

However some tweeters have taken the chance to be less than kind.
