Horrifying CCTV footage has been released showcasing the shocking consequences of dangerous driving.

In scenes that are sure to scare even the most diligent of motorists, clips released by the Highways Agency have revealed what happens if you don't pay attention when driving through roadworks.

The dramatic footage was released in an attempt to remind drivers of the importance of driving with extra care through roadworks.

The shocking CCTV footage has prompted a Government minister to warn drivers that "saving a few seconds on your journey is simply not worth it".

The collection, taken from cameras across England’s motorways and major A roads, shows the terrifying aftermath of one reckless driver undertaking a lorry.

In the nightmare smash, the vehicle crashes into a motorway’s central reservation before overturning.

Another clip shows the moment a lorry plouged into the back of a car, sending it crashing into a set of roadworks – just a few metres away from workers.

In another horror case highlighted, a road worker was hit by a vehicle as he helped direct traffic past an accident on the A303.

Roger Pomeroy, 51, was struck by a car travelling at 40mph. The vehicle carried him for nearly 100 metres and then threw him to the ground. He suffered head injuries and broke his leg in two places.

"My most vivid memory was of Maxine [my partner] at the hospital just crying and crying. I didn’t know whether I was going to survive or die," he said.

Roads minister Robert Goodwill said the "safety of those who work on our roads is paramount."

"Saving a few seconds on your journey is simply not worth the cost of the delays caused by these incidents, let alone the devastating impact they can have on lives and families."
