Tennessee County Clerks Resign 'For God's Glory' Rather Than Issue Marriage Licenses To Gay Couples

Staff Resign For 'God's Glory' Rather Than Issue 'Gay Marriage Licenses'

NEW YORK -- Three county clerks in Tennessee have resigned rather than issue marriage licenses to gay couples, with one of the trio telling a local newspaper they were doing it “for the glory of God.”

Gwen Pope, Sharon Bell and Mickey Butler handed in their resignations in protest at the Supreme Court decision allowing same-sex marriage across all 50 US states. “It’s for the glory of God. He’s going to get all the glory,” Pope told the Jackson Sun.

David Boroughs, the local count commissioner, spoke out in praise of the Godly triumvirate, telling the newspaper, “I’m proud of them that their faith is so strong and well-rounded that they feel they can do that.”

When asked what they would do to secure fresh employment, Pope said: “I honestly believe God will take care of us.”

Last weekend, the HuffPost UK attended the annual Pride event in New York to ask revelers about the progress on LGBT rights, as well as the likelihood of America electing its first openly gay commander-in-chief. Watch the video above.
