Tom Cruise wasn't the name that first came to mind for Lee Child's many fans of the Jack Reacher novels.

But the proof of the pudding is nearly here, with the Mission: Impossible actor taking on the role of the 6'5", 50-inch chested former military policeman in the big screen adaptation.

In the latest clip, the 50-year-old actor takes on five assailants, giving them fair warning that his scars weren't easily won. Who's your money on? WATCH CRUISE IN ACTION ABOVE.

The adaptation, which has the author's blessing, was written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie (who also wrote The Usual Suspects), and also stars Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall (Cruise's co-star in 'Days of Thunder') and Werner Herzog.

Meanwhile, the American official website for the film (which opens five days earlier in America) has been updated with an interactive game, where you can "Take The Law Into Your Own Hands" - click here to see if you fare as well as Tom Cruise.

Jack Reacher is in UK cinemas from Boxing Day, 26 December. Watch the trailer below...
