Brooklyn Heights residents in New York are campaigning to honour late Beastie Boys star Adam Yauch by renaming a local park.

They initially planned to pay tribute to the rapper, who lost his cancer battle earlier this month, by turning his local green spot Squibb Park, into Adam Yauch Park.

The Brooklyn Heights Blog community wrote: "[The] park sits directly across the street from the Harry Chapin Playground, which is also named after a great Brooklyn Heights resident, musician and humanitarian."

The plans took a new direction after Yauch's bandmate Adam "AdRock" Horovitz and his wife Kathleen Hanna contacted the campaign to say work had already begun on refurbishing and renaming State Street Park instead.

In a message sent to the campaign's official Facebook page Rename Squibb Park in Brooklyn Heights to Honor Adam Yauch, Ms Hanna wrote: "I just wanted to let you know that Adam “Adrock” Horovitz has already begun working with the Parks Commissioner to fix up and rename State Street Park where Yauch actually played as a kid to Adam Yauch Park.

"It would be great to get people behind THIS idea as it won’t hurt the Squibb family….Thanks, Kathleen Hanna."

The site says it has since had confirmation of the plans from the Beastie Boys' management and clarifies that while Facebook has not allowed the name of the page to be changed (because it has more than 200 likes), it enthusiastically backs the plans for State Street Park.

It added: "While the name of our page remains the same, we no longer advocate changing the name of Squibb Park. We are 100% committed to doing all we can to making Adam Yauch Park a reality on State Street."

News of the plans comes a week after local government officials in New York prompted the state senate to pass a resolution which declared that it was mourning the death of Yauch, aka MCA.
