Move Over, Susanna... Could Rachel Riley Be The New Face Of 'BBC Breakfast'?

Ever since Susanna Reid announced that she would be leaving BBC Breakfast to move onto pastures new at ITV, there's been a lot of talk about who will be replacing her.

If the latest rumours are to be believed, her heir to the 'BBC Breakfast' throne (well, sofa at least) could be a little closer to home than she might have thought...

'Countdown' presenter Rachel Riley, who competed against Susanna in the most recent series of 'Strictly Come Dancing', is thought to be the producers' current favourite to front the morning show.

A BBC insider told The Mirror: “Rachel ticks a lot of boxes and is at that stage in her career where she might be ready to try something new.

“After losing Susanna, the BBC know they have to hit back and ensure they can cling on to viewers.”

As well as 'Countdown', which she has been a part of since the departure of Carol Vorderman in 2008, the 28-year-old's presenting credits include Channel 5's 'The Gadget Show' and hosting duties on Manchester United's 'MUTV'.

Other potential candidates for the job include Channel 5 news presenter Louise Minchin and current relief presenter Sally Nugent.

A source told The Mirror "About the only thing set in stone so far is that it will be a woman as it’s important to keep that balance on the sofa."

Meanwhile, last week Susanna expressed her excitement at joining the presenting team on the forthcoming ITV morning show 'Good Morning Britain', alongside Ben Shephard, Charlotte Hawkins and Sean Fletcher.

She tweeted: "I'm very excited to be joining Good Morning Britain. I have loved being at BBC Breakfast & will miss the team", before going on to describe the new venture as an opportunity that she "couldn't turn down".
