Who's The Strangest Misfit On TV?
|

This Monday sees the release of 'Community' Season 5 on DVD, seeing the antics continue amid the mismatched study group from Greendale College.

Season 5 sees the exit of regulars Chevy Chase and Donald Glover, but the return of recurring favourite Professor Ian Duncan, played by British comedian and talkshow host John Oliver.

In aid of its release, and inspired by the show’s bunch of unlikely friends, here are some of the most singular misfits to grace the small screen.

'Community' Season 5 is available now on DVD.

The Screen's Biggest Misfits
Alan Partridge(01 of10)

If you take every petty and self-indulgent English character trait and squeeze them into the mind of a late-night radio host from Norwich, you have Alan Partridge. He is self-aggrandising despite being completely unremarkable, patronising and exploitative of the few friends he has, and comically devoid of all taste. Every scene is a socially awkward car crash, and yet you cannot look away.Quote:“Well Sonja that was classic intercourse. So, er, thanks. Let's just pop the extractor fan on, get a through draught going.”
Hannah Horvath(02 of10)
Open Image Modal
Forced to fend for herself in New York City after her parents cut off her allowance, Hanna is a privileged-cum-impoverished narcissist. Her quirks set her apart from not only the other girls in the show, but any girl in any show; as she is exceptionally body-confident, brutally honest and unashamedly weird.Quote:“I think that I may be the voice of my generation. Or at least a voice. Of a generation.”
Morris Moss - The IT Crowd(03 of10)
Open Image Modal
IT worker Moss is your stereotypical nerd, multiplied to the power of y. He is a computer genius who lives with his mother, painstakingly documents the staples in his stapler, and uses the website ‘bluffball.co.uk’ just to hold a conversation about sport with ‘real men’.Quote:“I can't go to jail, Roy! They'll rape the flip out of me!”
Phoebe from Friends(04 of10)
Open Image Modal
Anyone who spent the smallest amount of time in the vicinity of a television set in the 1990s will likely be familiar with the ‘weird one’ from Friends. Phoebe, also known as ‘Regina Phalange’ or ‘Princess Consuela Bananahammock’, is a hippie masseuse and a committed songwriter. Her most recited song is ‘smelly cat’, in which the titular flatulent feline provides a metaphor for societal outcasts like herself. Quote:“Your tombstone can say whatever you want it to say! Mine's going to say, ‘Phoebe Buffay: Buried alive.’ “
Saul Goodman- Breaking Bad(05 of10)
Open Image Modal
Saul Goodman is a criminal lawyer - with the emphasis on ‘criminal’ - who represents Walter White and Jesse Pinkman as they struggle to establish a meth dealing business in Breaking Bad. Saul proves surprisingly competent despite his unprofessional eccentricity, his crude adverts (“I can prove that baby’s not yours!”) and his diploma from the completely made up University of American Samoa.Quote:“Look, let's start with some tough love, alright? Ready for this? Here it goes: you two suck at peddling meth. Period.”
Vince Noir - The Mighty Boosh(06 of10)
Open Image Modal
Almost certainly the most outrageous zookeeper on television, Vince Noir stands out from the crowd with his elaborate costumes, prominent personality and even more prominent cheekbones. Vince reacts to the monsters, oddballs and surreal situations of The Mighty Boosh with a relaxed air – so long as no one is foolish enough to copy his outfit. Quote:Describes his hairstyle as having “your basic back-comb structure, slightly root-boosted framing with a cheeky fringe”.
Abed - Community(07 of10)
Open Image Modal
A caring yet socially inept film buff, Abed forms the emotional core of the characters whom inhabit Community’s Greendale College. His obsessions with film and television cause him to interpret life through cinematic tropes; to the extent that Abed seems aware of himself as a character in a TV show, and uncannily breaks the fourth wall on numerous occasions. Quote:“We'll definitely be back next year. If not, it'll be because an asteroid has destroyed all human civilization. And that's canon.”
Craster - Game of Thrones(08 of10)
Open Image Modal
You don’t have to look far in a Game of Thrones to find misfits; but to pick one, from the hordes of eccentric evildoers and sword swinging maniacs, we’d have to go with Craster. Living in the frozen northern region of Westeros, Craster lives with his 19 daughters, who are also his wives, and bearers of his children. As for what happens to his sons, well… that’s even weirder. If that’s possible.Quote:“Any man lays a hand on one of my wives…. He loses the hand.”
Daisy Steiner - Spaced(09 of10)
Open Image Modal
A paragon for unemployed twenty-somethings everywhere, Daisy is as intelligent and ambitious as she is lazy. As an aspiring writer, she rarely spends any of her time actually writing, and instead directs her bubbly enthusiasm to the assorted misadventures that herself and her equally underachieving friends find themselves in. Quote:Daisy: “I'm going to be as inactive as I can to see if the predicament of enforced passivity exacerbates itself. You know, does inactivity breed laziness?” Tim : “Are you going to write an article about it?” Daisy: “No, I can't be bothered.”
The Doctor(10 of10)
Open Image Modal
While the time-travelling, planet-hopping Doctor’s personality has changed throughout his numerous depictions, he remains eccentric, jovial and purposefully unpredictable.Quote:“I’m usually called "The Doctor." Or "The Caretaker." Or "Get off this planet." Though, strictly speaking, that probably isn't a name.”
