Many viewers praised Barbara Windsor's understated performance, which really tugged at the heartstrings.

Despite being given months to live by medics, Peggy will actually make her last appearance next Tuesday (17 May).

Her death will pave the way for returns from Ross Kemp and Danniella Westbrook as her children Grant and Sam.

Bosses have promised Peggy's final scenes will be some of EastEnders' most emotional ever, with executive producer Dominic Treadwell Collins claiming it is "the performance of Barbara's lifetime".

Speaking to showbiz correspondent Richard Arnold, she said: “They were hard but - sorry I’m going to get upset - I did my crying afterwards, I had to.

“I had to give this performance and she’s quite tough and I hope people accept the way I played her with cancer because I have to tell all the viewers that everybody’s different.”
