Disaster well and truly struck as ‘The Great British Bake Off’ hosted its first ever Vegan Week on Wednesday night.

Contestant Ruby was left in tears after her two-tier cake toppled just moments before it was due to be judged.

In some of the most dramatic ‘Bake Off’ scenes since the infamous ‘bin gate’, viewers saw the top tier of her chocolate, lemon and coconut showstopper bake slowly slide off before crashing to the work bench.

The contestants were outside the tent at the time, and could only look on in horror as Ruby’s efforts fell apart.

It was left for presenters Noel Fielding and Sandi Toksvig to break the news to Ruby, who was crushed and burst into tears.

There was some good news though, as judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith later praised the bake for how it tasted.

However, she was not the only one who was left despairing at the challenges vegan baking presented.

Frontrunner Rahul’s showstopper also collapsed while in the fridge, leaving him devastated when he opened the door to find it in a sorry state.

Despite both of their disasters, Ruby and Rahul managed to avoid being sent home, with Jon leaving the tent after his bakes failed to impress Paul and Prue.

‘Great British Bake Off’ continues next Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4.
