My Top 5 Songs of 2014

So 2014 comes to an end and another skull crushingly dull X-Factor winner tops the charts. Yay! But leaving Nicki Minaj's dreadfully inept Anaconda and Avril Levigne's hilariously awful Hello Kitty! aside, it's actually been a great year for music and some genuinely enjoyable songs have sailed its waves. Yarrrr!

Erm, so without further ado, and in no particular order, here are my top songs of 2014:

Todd Terje - Delorean Dynamite

Todd is a great producer and this gently modulating, key changing, 7 minutes of 80's inspired electronica is nothing short of brilliant. It would be the music I would put over a documentary about epic mining machines, factories and conveyor belts, but I am a bit strange.

Thundercat & Eric Andre - Tron Song

This song is about the singer's cat, Tron. And it's electro jazz fusion. And the video was made for $5000. To me, that equals massive amounts of win.

Big Wreck - A Place To Call Home

You've never heard of Big Wreck, an American band with a couple of major top ten hits in North America behind them. If your bag is epic, soaring magnificence then this is most definitely for you.

BiS - Stupig

BiS split up in July this year which is a shame because this 'anti girl group' sure were fun while they lasted. Released in January, 'Stupig' encapsulates them pretty well: distorted-electro-guitar-synth-meets-nosebleed-industrial-techno-avante-guard-cyber-punk-science-fiction-horror-movie. I'm seriously not joking.

Babymetal - Gimme Choco!!!

I used to have a musical radar but Babymetal smashed it to pieces. Now it's lying on the floor in bits crying tiny tears of melted plastic. And I don't think anyone in the West saw this coming, as far out of left-field and confusing as it is. Who knew sugar pop would mix so well with death metal? Exactly.
