"But over the last five years relations have thawed considerable and he has done radio work for them, which was a great way of being eased back in."

Adrian sensationally quit ‘The One Show’ in 2010 to front ITV’s revamped breakfast show ‘Daybreak’ in a big money deal.

The broadcaster then also managed to poach Adrian's ‘One Show’ co-host Christine Bleakley to join him.

However, despite both being given four-year contracts with ITV, the pair were axed from ‘Daybreak’ after only a year, due to poor ratings.

Adrian continued to front football coverage for the channel, and when his deal expired in 2014, he signed a new two-year contract to continue hosting the football, but he was axed just six months into the new deal in January with no explanation.

The Mirror reported at the time that he received a payout from ITV of around £750,000 and £1 million to compensate losing such a high-profile job.

He was later replaced by Mark Pougatch, who still hosts the channel's sport coverage.
