How Many Of These TV And Film Locations Can You Recognise?
|

"I watch each episode of 'Revenge' twice," says one captivated viewer. "I watch each episode a second time for the houses and location shots!”

Not surprising, really, when this hit show makes the most of its swanky locations, set among one of America's most glorious vacation spots known to everyone who needs to know simply as The Hamptons - to the rest of us the southern fork of the further tip of Long Island, New York State, easy pickings for a weekend trip by urbane Manhattanites, aspirational beach combing for the rest of us.

Just your average holiday home, owned by the Grayson family in 'Revenge'

When Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) moves to The Hamptons, it seems like a plan too good to be true. And it is, because she's really there to avenge the death of her family, which she blames on the Grayson family next door. From her beach house, she can keep a close eye on the Graysons in their next door pad, above.

In further proof of the significance of location to the success of a film or TV show, TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE with our list - chosen from the top ten on this stunningly comprehensive list at www.movie-locations.com - and just imagine if these stories had been set somewhere else…

This is the work shed of Quint (played by Robert Shaw) in Steven Spielberg's generation-defining thriller 'Jaws'. It's in the tiny port of Menemsha, part of well-to-do Martha's Vineyard, better known to cinema-goers as Amity Island, the resort brought to its knees by the sight of a dorsal fin.

This stunning castle was one of two villas in Salzburg used for Captain Von Trapp's family home. All the lakeside scenes were filmed here, including when the Captain declares his love for Maria. The rest of the film was made on location around the stunning Austrian town, as well as a few studio bits back in the Hollywood studios of 20th Century Fox. Don't dismay though - Maria's abbey really was, and still is, an abbey, even if it there isn't a view over the mountains as there is in the film.

Feeling disturbed just looking at this? It's the actual exterior location of The Timberline Lodge, better known as the Overlook Hotel where writer Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) gets more creative inspiration than he bargained for in 'The Shining'. The entire rest of the film was shot in England, a place director Stanley Kubrick famously wouldn't leave (hence Vietnam being recreated in East London for 'Platoon', Manhattan being remade in Berkshire for 'Eyes Wide Shut'). Confusion reigns over this location, often credited to another hotel, The Stanley, in Estes Park, Colorado - that was where writer Stephen King was staying when he was inspired to pen the original tome. Is that a good advert?

Kualoa Ranch, Kamehameha Highway, Ka’a’awa Valley on Oahu - this was where Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and the children found themselves in the path of a herd of Gallimimus fleeing from the Rex. And yes, you can get a photo of yourselves under the tree. Much of Steven Spielberg's dinosaur-us epic was filmed on the smaller Hawaiian island of Kauai.

Recognise this famous bench? It's where Forrest Gump used to hang out and shoot the breeze in the surprise film, which brought Tom Hanks his second Oscar. For the film, the bench was placed on the north side Chippewa Square in Savannah, Georgia, but there isn't usually any seating there, instead they're to be found in the actual garden. And the bench… that now sits in The Savannah History Museum, having properly earned its place. Most of the film was made in locations around the town of Beaufort, South Carolina, with the exception of those famous excursions to Washington and other political and historical hotspots where Forrest found himself.

Portobello Road Market, the heart of London's Notting Hill, was where American superstar Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) was whisked off her feet by stuttering British bookseller William Thacker (Hugh Grant). His shop didn't sell books in real life - it sold antiques, with the real Travel Bookshop around the corner, until rising rents forced it to close its doors in 2011. Why so? Gentrification of the neighbourhood, accelerated by - you guessed it - being featured in a hit film. And that famous blue door? That belonged to the house of screenwriter Richard Curtis, and was auctioned off for charity.

Pulp Fiction(14 of20)

The good news is that, unlike many of the distinctive Pulp Fiction exteriors, Jack Rabbit Slim is still standing. The bad news is that you won't be able to order a Douglas Sirk Burger if you get here, and that's always been the case. The interior was a studio set, the exterior belonged to a disused bowling alley in Glendale, Los Angeles. It now belongs to the Walt Disney Imagineering Campus, which have kept some of the original elements in its new interior design.

This is an easy one. Carrie Bradshaw's unfeasibly glamorous abode in what we are led to believe is a rent-controlled brownstone on East 73rd Street. In reality, this much-photographed stoop can be found on West 4th Street in Greenwich Village. Photographs on the famous steps are allowed in exchange for a small donation to an animal charity, something of which Carrie would surely approve.

Revenge(20 of20)

What about this extraordinary pile? Victoria's stunning turret is just one of the things to covet about Grayson Manor, as well as its huge sprawling grounds and private beach. Where is it? Well, the inside is that of a mansion near Wilmington North Carolina. As for the outside… and this may come as a disappointment… it doesn't exist after all! It's all the hard work of CGI, somewhere in a Hollywood back room. No place to visit for this one, although it was modelled on several other genuine estates in the Hamptons, so it's surely got to be worth a trip just to covet similar but real architectural inspirations.
