In a statement the 'I Want It That Way' singers said: "We always wanted to make a film and now is the ideal time - with Kevin back, the fact that we are masters of our own destiny, a new album in the works and our 20th anniversary all adds up to being the right time to share our story."

'Backstreet Boys - The Movie' (working title) is being made by Pulse Films, whom previously worked on music documentaries about Blur, Katy Perry and LCD Soundsystem.

2013 marks the Backstreet Boy's 20th anniversary. The have now sold in excess of 130 million albums, making them one of the top 30 selling global artists of all time.

The film is said to "subvert all expectations that anyone has about the band" and will show their "unique and at times heart-breaking story for the first time, warts and all".

Director Stephen Kijak said: "After making a film with The Rolling Stones, what does one do to top that experience? Backstreet Boys, that's what!

"This is an incredible opportunity to make a film no one would expect the Backstreet Boys to make. What drew me to this project is their openness and willingness to push themselves into uncomfortable places, to be vulnerable and honest and to be really trusting of the filmmaking team to steer them in the right direction. This isn't some 3-D Boy Band puff piece - BSB is getting real and it has been exciting to work with them as they explore their past and start to look towards their futures."

'Backstreet Boys - The Movie is set to be complete by fall 2013.
