'Are You Being Served?' Remake Did Not Impress Many Fans Of The Original BBC Sitcom

The classic comedy was revived with an all-new cast.

The ‘Are You Being Served?’ remake failed to find many fans when it aired on Sunday (28 August), after viewers panned the updated sitcom.

The BBC revived the classic comedy with an all-new cast, as part of its Sitcom Season to celebrate the genre’s 60th anniversary with the broadcaster.

However, fans of the original series, which aired from 1972 to 1985 and starred the likes of Wendy Richard, John Inman and Mollie Sugden, were less than impressed.

Many accused the BBC of ruining a classic, questioning the decision to bring it back, while others called it “terrible” and “unfunny”.

However, there were some viewers who managed to raise a few laughs:

The mauling of the ‘Are You Being Served?’ remake came despite the show boasting an all-star cast, including Loose Women’s Sherrie Hewson as Mrs Slocombe, ‘Gavin And Stacey’ star Mathew Horne as Mr Grace, former ‘Hollyoaks’ actress Jorgie Porter as Miss Croft and BAFTA winning actor Jason Watkins as Mr Humphries.

It did manage to draw in five million viewers though, despite going up against’s ITV’s new big period drama ‘Victoria’, starring Jenna Coleman, which attracted 5.4m.

The BBC’s Sitcom Season continues with a prequel to ‘Keeping Up Appearances’, starring Kerry Howard as a young Hyacinth Bucket, which airs on Friday on BBC One. .

It was reported last week that the corporation decided to ditch a remake of ‘Up Pompeii’, after Miranda Hart pulled out of the project.

Now, we know we shouldn't be biased, but this is definitely one of our favourite spots.

Long before taking on the role of Sickboy in 'Trainspotting', the actor made an appearance in the now iconic sitcom.

After appearing in 'Extras' alongside Ricky Gervais, Ashley's career took her Stateside for 'Ugly Betty'.

Before that though, she popped up and made an uncredited(!) appearance in The Office's 2003 Christmas special.

Dominic's instantly recognisable to many TV fans nowadays, thanks to the fact he plays Emmerdale's Paddy Kirk.

However, before soapland came knocking, he popped up in one episode of this show, playing an unnamed petrol station assistant.
