‘Doctor Who’ executive producer Steven Moffat has revealed that Peter Capaldi was chosen as Matt Smith’s successor because he wasn’t conventionally handsome
Steven admitted that when casting the role of The Doctor, which has previously been played by the likes of David Tennant and Matt Smith, producers are looking for an actor who isn’t too good-looking.

Writing in this week’s Radio Times, he said: “When you choose a Doctor, you want somebody who is utterly compelling, attractive in a very odd way
“None of the Doctors are conventionally attractive, but they’re all arresting. Handsome men don’t quite suit.”
“Matt Smith’s a young, good-looking bloke from one angle but is actually the strangest looking man from another. You need that oddity; you need somebody who is carved out of solid star, really.”
He also revealed what it was that gave Peter the edge over other possible candidates hoping to play The Doctor, explaining: “There is something about [his] demeanour, his eyes, his attitude - he’s tremendously bright and that comes out on screen.”
Matt Smith hung up his bow tie and starred in his final episode of ‘Doctor Who’ last Christmas, which also marked Peter Capaldi’s ‘Doctor Who’ debut.
The series is due to return with Peter at the helm later this year, and will see Jenna Coleman reprising her role as The Doctor’s companion, Clara Oswald.
It will also feature a number of stars making guest appearances, including Ben Miller - who it's been revealed will be playing a villainous character - and former ‘Cold Feet’ star Hermione Norris.
