Gavin & Stacey creator Ruth Jones has admitted even she doesn’t know what’s next for Smithy and Nessa, following the cliffhanger ending in 2019′s Christmas special.

Ruth reunited with co-writer James Corden to pen a one-off reunion episode of their Bafta-winning sitcom, which saw Nessa not only professing for love to Smithy in its final moments, but getting down on one knee and proposing to him.

However, the nation was left gasping in unison as the episode came to an abrupt end before he could answer, leaving viewers wondering whether or not Smithy said yes.

And in an interview with The Sun, Ruth confessed that even she isn’t sure what comes next for the pair.

“Genuinely I don’t know the answer to that,” she explained, when asked if she saw a future for Smithy and Nessa.

“You could go either way with it. It could be the most ridiculous thing, or it could be a marriage made in heaven.”

She continued: “But don’t you think it would end the interest? If they did become a proper couple, would that spoil it? These are all questions that we ponder.”

At the moment, it remains unclear whether Ruth will write any more episodes of Gavin & Stacey with James, and while she recently said the cliffhanger ending left “room for more”, she also noted that getting the cast together for one special alone was a “challenge”.

“It’s a shame we didn’t have more time when we were writing so we could have written more, then have it all ready to go,” she added.

The Gavin & Stacey reunion proved to be a ratings smash, bringing the BBC its highest Christmas viewing figures in more than a decade.

It wasn’t without its controversies, though, with as many as 900 viewers complaining about the choice to include an uncensored homophobic slur when Nessa and Uncle Bryn performed the Christmas song Fairytale Of New York.
