He may have been crowned Sexiest Man Alive twice, but there's a lot more to Hollywood heartthrob George Clooney than his silver fox mane and old school good looks. The Academy Award winning actor, director and producer also has one of the most charitable hearts in tinsel town.

He's one of the stars of Brad Bird and Damon Lindelof's fantastical adventure 'Tomorrowland: A World Beyond'. In the film, a teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor are bound by a shared destiny. Together, they embark on a mission to unearth the secrets of a place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory.

To celebrate the film's home release, which shows George's character trying to make the world a better place, we look back at five times the actor has tried to do the same away from the camera.

Alongside his Ocean’s 11 co-stars Don Cheadle, Matt Damon and Brad Pitt and producer Jerry Weintraub, Clooney famously founded the charity Not on Our Watch. The organisation’s main goal is to stop the genocide occurring in Sudan and they have donated millions of pounds to those suffering in the region via the United Nations World Food Programme. Clooney has personally visited the Darfur region of Sudan where we spoke with victims of rape and torture.

As well as founding his own charity, Clooney is also quick to support charities that are close to his heart. One such charity is Realising the Dream, an organisation that continues the work of Dr and Mrs King helping to fight poverty and injustice. When the charity set up a fundraising auction, Clooney generously donated an evening with himself at the premiere of Ocean’s 13 which included a private after-party.

Following his Academy Award-winning role in Syriana, Clooney was inspired to stand up and make a change. The film explores the state of the oil industry in the hands of those personally involved and affected by it, and it motivated Clooney to become involved with the launch of Oil Change. Oil Change is a campaign to eliminate America’s dependence on foreign oil and when Clooney was quizzed on his reasons for getting involved with the campaign he simply replied “if you’re doing a movie about oil consumption and corruption, you can’t just talk the talk – you gotta walk the walk.”
ENOUGH Project(04 of05)

Again using his profile to help raise awareness of the troubles in Sudan, Clooney visited the Nuba Mountains with ENOUGH Project to highlight the atrocities of the Sudanese government on its own people. Clooney testified the issues before the US Senate Committee and days later was arrested at the Sudanese embassy in Washington DC after taking part in a peaceful protest with his father Nick Clooney.

Who can forget the 2007 writer strike which saw some of Hollywood’s elite fight tooth and nail for increased funding for the writers in comparison to the profits of the larger studios? Enter George Clooney to help save the day. Not only did Clooney volunteer to personally set up a so-called “mediation panel” with the help of his famous friends including Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, he also donated $25,000 to the Actors Fund which helps provide emergency assistance to people in the industry.
