The Stone Roses kicked off a summer of reunion concerts in Warrington on Wednesday night by performing their first gig in 16 years.

The band put on a breathtaking show at Warrington Parr Hall, playing an 11-song set comprising mainly of tracks from their two fabled albums.

Ian Brown and his bandmates kicked off proceedings with I Wanna Be Adored, the opening track of their lauded 1989 debut, sparking a jubilant response from the 1,500-strong crowd, including former Oasis star Liam Gallagher.

Frontman Brown chided those who were tweeting and taking pictures throughout the gig, urging them to enjoy "living in the moment", but overall appeared overjoyed to be back onstage with his old bandmates - guitarist John Squire, bass player Mani and drummer Reni.

They ripped through their back catalogue, playing a host of classic tracks including Made Of Stone, Waterfall, She Bangs The Drums and Sally Cinnamon.

Despite rumours of new material, there were no surprise songs at the gig, which ended with the band taking a bow and Brown telling the audience: "Thank you, we'll be back."

Moviemaker Shane Meadows then took the stage to film the audience.

The surprise warm-up gig before a string of summer comeback shows was announced just hours before the show on the band's website. The Stone Roses announced they were reforming in 2011.

Thrilled by what he saw, Gallagher tweeted: "Stone Roses are back... Speechless."
