The BAFTA Awards host tells chat show host Jonathan Ross that the pair met at a friend's house, and there were immediately sparks.

"I knew pretty much straight away that this was someone I wanted to spend, what I considered, the rest of my life with," he reveals. "Whether he thought the same because he's got rather a lot more (life to go)…"

Asked about the age gap between the pair, Stephen joked, "There is an age difference and I keep forgetting which way round it is but I think he’s younger than me… but I don’t mind…”

He also shares details of his proposal, admitting that he "thought he would say yes", but got nervous over the meal at a London restaurant, when Elliott didn't notice the ring Stephen had left on his fork.

"I bought a ring, and waited for him to pop off to the loo and put the ring on the prongs of a fork, so that he would see it as he started to eat. I thought it would be charming.

"Of course, he came back and he started chatting and he started playing with the fork and I thought, 'For God's sake, look at the fork' - you don't ever really look at forks, do you? - and I thought, He's going to pick it up and the ring is going to fly off into that lady's soup… but fortunately he just in time caught sight of it and it was a very teary and splendid moment."

Stephen shares, too, his delight that the staff of the Norfolk registry office helped him keep his wedding private by putting a false date into the computer in case he got hacked. He and Elliott are now planning a honeymoon, location also secret, for after Stephen's BAFTA duties are complete. He hosts this year's BAFTA Awards, which will take place tomorrow evening at London's Royal Opera House, and be broadcast on BBC1 at 9pm.

The Jonathan Ross Show is on ITV tonight at 9.20pm.
