House Of Cards' Constance Zimmer Says Kevin Spacey Allegations Ending Show 'Wouldn't Have Been Realistic'

"To rip it out from everybody because of one thing wouldn’t be telling the true story."

‘House Of Cards’ actor Constance Zimmer has commented that it would not have been “realistic” for the show to disappear without its sixth series, following the sexual harassment allegations made against its lead star Kevin Spacey last year.

Constance plays Janine Skorsky on the Netflix political drama, which starred Spacey as fictional figurehead Frank Underwood for five series.

When multiple people came forward to accuse the actor of sexual misconduct, including from ‘House Of Cards’ staff members, the streaming service briefly halted production on the new series, announcing shortly afterwards that they were severing ties with Spacey.

It was later confirmed that a sixth and final series of ‘House Of Cards’ would be going ahead, though Spacey’s on-screen wife Claire Underwood, played by Robin Wright, would be taking centre stage, not to mention a seat at the desk in the Oval Office.

Speaking to Press Association about Netflix’s decision to go ahead with series six, Constance said: “More than anything we were all incredibly excited to be coming back because to have a show be brought down by one element is not really realistic.

“There are a lot of people that put a lot of hard work into the show and we have developed a fan base and we have developed a family and to rip it out from everybody because of one thing wouldn’t be telling the true story.”

As well as his role on ‘House Of Cards’, Kevin Spacey was also dropped from his lead role in Ridley Scott’s ‘All The Money In The World’ just weeks before it was due to be released.

Extensive reshoots went ahead with Christopher Plummer taking over in Spacey’s place, a role for which Plummer was eventually honoured with an Oscar nomination.

The final series of ‘House Of Cards’ will be streaming on Netflix from Friday 2 November.
